The Texas City ISD Industrial Trades Center (TCISD ITC) is a program that supports students across Galveston County as well as the industry workforce. Texas City ISD already has partnerships with area business and industry leaders to train students for skilled labor jobs. Industry and community representatives have worked very closely with Texas City ISD leaders to outline the programs in need and the partnerships required to bring this program to fruition.

The Industrial Trades Center opened in January 2017 with approximately 200 TCISD students with a plan to expand to 400 high school students from across Galveston County in August 2017. The facility will be made available to industry and community colleges for training in the evenings and on weekends. All students and adults who receive training at the ITC will be a part of the random drug testing program. In addition to learning a skilled trade and earning industry certifications, TCISD ITC students will master workforce soft skills such as how to get along with others, communicate effectively, and make professional presentations. Students will also receive an introduction in effective employee management strategies to help prepare them to become successful supervisors in the future. Partnerships with local business, industry and community colleges will enable internships, articulation agreements, continuing education and dual credit. The TCISD ITC offers training in the following trades along with certifications as noted below:

- Maritime (Certified Logistics Technician)
- Construction Trades (OSHA, NCCER Core, NCCER Carpentry I, NCCER Carpentry II)
- Welding (NCCER Core, AWS D1.1, D9.1)
- Pipefitting (NCCER Core, NCCER Pipefitting I)
- Instrumentation and Electrical (NCCER Core, NCCER Electrical I, NCCER Instrumentation I)

All Students in the programs will have an opportunity to receive certifications on heavy equipment simulators including mobile crane, excavator, bull dozer, and fork lift.

Collaborative Effort

The Industrial Trades Center (ITC) in Texas City opened in January 2017. The ITC trains and educates high school students in the welding, pipe fitting, building construction, I&E and maritime trades. A student can get specific skill and trade training prior to graduation. The ITC seeks to train young, hirable workers, to fill the craft trades for the next few decades. These ITC students are drug tested and they also receive heavy safety training as well as their specific craft training. Now with over 275 students, the ITC has great staff, teachers and operations support that are passionate about giving students a chance at a skilled job. This benefits our community, the local chemical industry and other ancillary businesses that employ these trades. The ITC Advisory Council was created prior to the opening of the ITC. It was created from community members who desired to see the ITC advance and also to support and collaborate with the ITC staff and fulfill the following mission: The ITC Advisory Council mission is to support the students and staff of the ITC, by insuring we are training hire-able workers, by providing annual internships or apprenticeships opportunities for ITC students, and by sustaining annual community support through marketing awareness, grants and fundraising or donations. I am proud to Chair the council and privileged for our company A&A to work closely with the ITC staff and teachers. The future is bright!

“As the gatekeeper of safety training programs since 1987 for over 18,000 contract worker employees annually working in the Texas City petrochemical facilities, the Safety Council Texas City (SCTC) understands the importance of working with the owners, contractors and community to ensure workers go home safe and healthy every day.

SCTC believes that a skilled worker is a safe worker and has agreed to partner with TCISD, the community, owner facilities and their contractors to do our part in the success of the Industrial Trades Center. SCTC is committed to sponsor the curriculum materials for what is referred to as the “Core Curriculum: Introductory Craft Skills”.
